2012
On December 21, 2012, the Long Count Calendar used by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization among others completes a "great cycle" of thirteen b'ak'tuns (periods of 144,000 days each) since the mythical creation of the current era. On this day the Long Count date at creation—written 13.0.0.0.0 in modern notation and equivalent to August 11, 3114 BC in the proleptic Gregorian calendar—is repeated for the first time in a span of a little over 5,125 solar years. The completion of this cycle and the repetition of the previous creation's Long Count ending date have been central to various 2012 doomsday predictions since the 1960s. Academic researchers have not concluded that the ancient Maya themselves attached similar significance to this point in time.
Some people believe that the ending of this Mayan cycle will correspond with a global "consciousness shift" and the beginning of a new age. The date became the subject of speculation by Frank Waters in Mexico Mystique: The Coming Sixth Age of Consciousness (1975). The significance of 2012 (but not a specific day) was mentioned by José Argüelles in The Transformative Vision, and later in The Mayan Factor, promoted at the 1987 Harmonic Convergence.
