Thank You
New York City

16 September 2011

Although many people are criticizing the City of New York in regards to the Gilboa Dam and recent floods, I say THANK YOU for significantly strengthening the dam and installing the flood warning system. The city’s DEP under former commissioner Emily Lloyd spent millions of dollars and unquestionably saved many lives on August 28th. My neighborhood evacuated when the dam siren went off. And the dam held even though the water was much deeper than in 1996; they had calculated that only a few inches more than ’96 would have broken the dam.

THANK YOU, to the DEP and Emily Lloyd who I beat on mercilessly a few years ago, and Paul Costa and Paul Rush and all the other many people involved. YOU SAVED OUR LIVES.

Flow Rates

During high water events, Schoharie Creek flow rates are periodically broadcast on the Schoharie County fire frequency, 46.180, often at half-hour intervals. Flow is given for Prattsville and Blenheim-Gilboa gauges in cubic feet per second. Direction of flow is from Prattsville to B-G. 10,000 cfs at B-G is minor flood level, 20,000 is moderate flooding, 40,000 is major flooding and 70,800 is the 19 January 1996 record flood.

Water Vapor

This shows the most recent image of the United States, from a NOAA satellite. This image is taken using a wavelength sensitive to the content of water vapor in the atmosphere. Bright and colored areas indicate high water vapor (moisture) content (colored and white areas indicate the presence of both high moisture content and/or ice crystals). Black and brown areas indicate little or no moisture present. WV imagery is useful for both determining locations of moisture and atmospheric circulations.
